A small, family-run lodge between the river and the rainforest, built around early starts, good food and long days in the field.
Birders Lodge is a small, quiet lodge on Pethiyakanda Road in Kudawa, a short walk from the main entrance to Sinharaja. Under new family ownership since 2025, it has been lovingly refreshed: clean, spacious rooms, a riverside deck and a kitchen known for its village cooking.
Clean, spacious rooms look out over the river and the rainforest. Some have floor-to-ceiling glass, so you can watch the forest from bed; all are quiet and set apart for privacy.
The family who run the lodge cook generous, village-style Sri Lankan food: rice and curry in clay pots, string hoppers and fresh fruit for breakfast, and early coffee before the morning walk. Breakfast is included.
Watch kingfishers and wagtails along the banks from the deck, with a cup of Ceylon tea, before and after your walks.
Fruiting trees in the grounds attract barbets, parakeets and hanging parrots; some hard-to-find endemics are seen from the lodge itself.
“Clean spacious rooms with great views towards the river and the rainforest. The family in charge is very kind and helpful.”
“We were delighted to discover this lodge in the heart of nature, just above the river. The rooms are beautiful, clean, and comfortable.”
“The breakfast and dinner they provided was abundant and delicious… a traditional Sri Lankan breakfast.”
